Background information on how SETAR has started as Telecommunications Company owned by the government to an incorporated company with an intensified focus on its customers.n 1986 Aruba obtained its `Status Aparte’ in the Dutch Kingdom. This meant that Aruba was to form part of the Dutch Kingdom with its own government. Aruba was then ready to start up its own Telecommunications Company. Before 1986, all international telecommunications had gone through Curaçao, which was primarily a service for telephone and telegraph at this point in time. On Aruba, the `Landsradio’ (International and Telegram Service) and `Telefoondienst’ (Local Telephone Service) were merged into SETAR (Servicio di Telecomunicacion di Aruba).The main goal for the up-and-coming telecommunications company of SETAR was to connect Aruba to the rest of the world and to provide the best possible Telecommunications Services to the people of Aruba. The local telecommunication infrastructure is a sophisticated network, consisting of 5ESS digital exchanges. These digital exchanges have a high capacity, which can easily be expanded through its modular architecture. This provides a wide variety of advanced telecommunication services. The exchanges are interconnected by means of fiber optic and digital microwave networks in order to guarantee route diversity, high availability and reliability.For international telecommunication, SETAR has a network consisting of a 5ESS exchange, fiber optic connectivity through the Americas I, Americas II, Columbus II, Pan-American, Antilles I, Taino Carib and Alonso de Ojeda cable systems, Standard A and Standard B earth stations for thin routes, an international telex exchange and digital microwave systems. With the available infrastructure, SETAR can provide its customers with IDR and IBS satellite services. The earth stations are furthermore equipped for video up- and down-linking.International direct and operator-assisted calls are possible to all countries in the world. SETAR N.V. Aruba's national telecommunication provider is the principal telecommunication company on the island. SETAR N.V. provides solutions for Fixed line, Mobile, Internet and Data.
The company's cellular communications infrastructure offers both GSM and TDMA services. SETAR has more than 70, 000 registered cellular subscribers giving the company a better than 70% penetration rate. Setar also offers trunking and paging.
In 2002 SETAR N.V. introduced international roaming for both its GSM and TDMA customers. Some countries with which commercial roaming agreements have been signed are the USA, The Caribbean, Colombia, The Netherlands, Venezuela and the United Kingdom.
GPRS, Internet chatting, ring tones, WAP and MMS services were recently introduced on the GSM network; picture sending and receiving, downloading of ring tones and logos and Internet access are now possible through the cellular phone. SMS is available on both networks as the networks are interconnected.
SETAR N.V. is also an Internet provider and offers island-wide, high-speed DSL services. There are over 13,-0 DSL subscribers, one of the highest penetration rates in the region.
Another service of SETAR N.V. is high-speed Wi-Fi Internet access for laptop and PDA. The Wi-Fi service is offered at several hotspots on the island, including hotels, restaurants, bars and even on the beach for fast, easy Internet access.
SETAR also offers the 123 Instant Access with a 56 kbps dial-up service. With the 123 Instant Access one can surf the Internet without an account; this service is targeted mainly at the tourist market.
